A Prestigious Academy located in Brighton is seeking a Senior IT Technician to join their team on a permanent basis. The ideal candidate is someone who can provide management of IT services, general IT support, and help design solutions regarding network and system configurations and installations across the organisation.


The organisation is a co-educational academy based in Portslade, Brighton for 11 to 16 year olds. There have been some exciting developments at the academy in the last couple of years with a vast improvement in exam results, the opening of a £12.7 million new campus building and the development of a number of new specialisms in Science, Cricket, Football and Dance for post 16 study. There is also a strong emphasis on an entrepreneurial approach.

In the last five years, the school has doubled in size, it is a strong, cohesive community school serving students from across the west of Brighton and West Sussex. They are a charitable Trust of entrepreneurial community schools and colleges that help young people to reach their potential. They support the schools’ Principals and teachers in rapidly improving the quality of education on offer at early years, primary, secondary and sixth-form levels in order to transform the life-chances of the students.


They are seeking to appoint a hands on, experienced and highly motivated individual as Senior IT Technician. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with proven skills, problem-solving ability and aspirations to undertake the management of day-to-day operations on the academy's sites, managing call queues and helping IT Technicians on site in delivering excellent customer support services. The role would suit someone who has initiative, experience working in a busy school or cluster environment and excellent communication skills. The IT team handles all aspects of the IT infrastructure and services.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To lead the monitoring and updating of daily call queues, tasks and projects.

  • To manage all support calls for daily operation of the various network services provided across sites, including: Access Controls, CCTV network, Cashless Catering, MIS systems, Cloud solutions, Educational and non-educational software, and any other IT systems and devices connected to our networks

  • To provide 2nd line technical support for servers and clients, and escalate as necessary or liaise with 3rd party support providers.

  • To manage and be responsible for one or more sites call logging systems to a good standard, working towards meeting agreed Service Level Agreements and PKIs on a daily basis.

  • To ensure tickets are processed within the standards and managed appropriately through to completion and within the agreed SLA.

  • To use own initiative, knowledge and experience to solve problems and deliver solutions for end users.

  • To provide clear and effective communication between customers and IT team.

  • To manage the maintenance and repair all workstations, printers, projectors and other devices connected to the network either through onsite repairs or working together with 3rd party companies.

  • Help with software updates and patches to ensure IT Infrastructure is secure and up to date, some of these will take place after core hours or weekends.

  • To inspect all devices connected to our networks as scheduled on the maintenance strategy and repair or fix if needed.

  • Day to day supervision, mentoring or training for IT Technicians, Contractors and Apprentices, ensuring that IT Technicians and IT Apprentices get the right mentoring and support to run a smooth IT system.

  • To undertake network management tasks as directed by the Line Manager.

  • To provide documentation, advice, training and support to users on hardware and software related issues, and the use of the network IT services.

  • To provide in-class support for teachers and students using ICT rooms as agreed with the Line Manager.

  • To manage the agreed backup strategy with up to date backups, maintain inventories and licenses for all Network IT services.

  • To ensure the security and confidentiality of all information held on the IT network and maintained in line with the UK law, data protection and Trust policies.

  • To assist with advanced tasks, deployments and troubleshooting to develop and improve the Network IT Services.

  • To source, order and purchase high value computer and information technology hardware and software, in accordance with the Trust’s financial procedures and ensure that adequate supplies are maintained.

  • To develop own level of advanced technical knowledge, ensuring a high level of service delivery to end users, with the ability to train and support the team with new IT developments.

  • To work outside of normal working hours at short notice to resolve issues affecting systems availability or to complete project work.

  • Technicians are expected to support all schools within the cluster, some carrousel will be necessary from time to time to cover all schools for risk management proposes and best practice.

  • To own a Trust or Cluster wide IT process to manage from time to time.

  • To support any other duties as appropriate to the role

  • Contribute to the development of others by sharing professional learning, expertise and skills

Review and Evaluation:

  • Participate in current arrangements for Performance Management. In conjunction with the Line Manager

  • Take responsibility for personal professional development

Other Responsibilities:

  • Active Directory / DHCP / DNS within a Windows Server infrastructure

  • Technical knowledge on Google Apps or Office 365, Windows 8+, Office 2013+ -

  • A working knowledge of network systems, their installation and maintenance and adaptation

  • Knowledge of AV equipment

  • Any experience with education software

  • 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and Maths or equivalent

  • A Level’s

  • Computing related degree

  • MCP / MCSE

  • Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware virtualised environments, HP & Dell server/switch hardware
